Could the League One defender be a replacement for one of City's current centre backs?
Bristol City are reported to be looking at signing one of the top defenders in League One.
The Daily Mail is reporting thai sbo the Robins are 'lining up a summer swoop' for Portsmouth's Matt Clarke.
The 21-year-old, left-sided centre-back's performances for eighth placed Pompey have reportedly attracted interest from Championship sides Wolverhampton Wonderers, Hull and Reading along with Premier League sides Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford.
Now the scouts at Bristol City are reported to have taken a shine to him.
Clarke started his football career as a trainee at Ipswich Town but never played for the first team. In the 2015/16 season he joined Portsmouth on loan and played 26 games in his first season there as a teenager.
In June 2016 Clarke moved on a free transfer to Portsmouth and has so far made 72 appearances, including 43 this season, thai sbo scoring three goals in all competitions.
However any team who wants to lure Clarke away from Fratton Park might have to part with a considerable sum as the defender signed a new contract earlier this year, extending his time at the club until June 2020.
In a similar fashion Bristol City star defender Aden Flint signed a new contract at Ashton Gate back in March after a summer of transfer speculation of his future.
The new deal includes the club option of extending the deal until 2021.
However with the Robins now looking highly unlikely to make the Championship play-offs, City's stars - the likes of Flint, Joe Bryan and Bobby Reid, look once again to be the subject of raids from top clubs this summer.
Clarke intriguingly plays in the same position as Flint, although of course City currently have plenty of options at centre back including thai sbo Nathan Baker, who joined from Aston Villa last summer, and skipper Bailey Wright.
